French Riviera – September is for Super Yachts and Sailing….
For anyone with a penchant for the nautical side of life, September on the Côte d’Azur is the place to be as it offers a series of international events that attract visitors from all over the world. From world-renowned sailors to traditional vessel owners and those in the market for a super yacht, Monaco Classic Week, the Nice Regattas, the Royal Regattas in Cannes, Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez and the Monaco Yacht show provide some of the industry’s must-go events.
From 14 to 18 September, the eleventh Monaco Classic Week was held with its usual sprinkling of glamour and glory along the Quai Antoine 1er. It featured an incredible collection of 58 sailing yachts, including ten boats over 30 metres, which raced each day. This year luxury yacht Creole was honoured with the coveted trophy, helmed by Allegra Gucci, and many well-known sailors attended the event, such as Sir Robin Knox-Johnston (crowned Personnalité de la Mer 2013) and Guo Chuan, who, after spending 137 days on a 12-metre boat, recently set a solo round-the-world record.
The fourth Régates de Nice is running this year from 17 to 22 September, but for 2013 the name has changed to Régates de Nice Trophée Pasqui in honour of renowned boatmaker Gilbert Pasqui. This popular event sees traditional sailing vessels compete over three days and is based in the Port of Nice and the harbour at Villefranche-sur-Mer.
With around 90 classic yachts, 1,000 sailors and some sail areas equivalent to an Olympic swimming pool, Cannes will be rolling out its red carpet from 21 to 29 September for the Régates Royales. Celebrating its 35th year and featuring over 150 of some of the most beautiful yachts in the world, this event – set with the beautiful Lérins Islands and the Estérel mountains behind – is the focal point of the season.
A breath-taking collection of both modern and traditional yachts along with racers and sailing enthusiasts make up the ingredients for the Les Voiles de St Tropez. Held in the bay of Saint-Tropez this regatta has now been running for over 26 years. This year, from 29 September to 6 October, more than 300 yachts – including the latest design from British architect Rob Humphreys – will be part of this unique and exciting event.
From 25-28 September 2013, Monaco hosts the most prestigious event of the year, the Monaco Yacht Show. During this 23rd edition, more than 500 companies and 30,000 visitors are expected to attend to discover the most exclusive yachts and innovative products on the market – and more than 100 super yachts are waiting to be unveiled in Port Hercules.
