Val Thorens in French Alps Crowned World’s Best Ski Resort
Val Thorens, located in the Tarentaise Valley of the French Alps, has just been crowned World’s Best Ski Resort 2014. It was in the running against some tough international competition – including Deer Valley near Salt Lake City in the USA, Perisher in Australia’s New South Wales and Niseko, Japan’s most famous ski resort – but, finally, for the second consecutive year, Val Thorens triumphed as the best ski resort in the world.
Once a well-kept secret and now a dream ski destination, over the years the purpose-built Val Thorens has gradually become a fashionable and successful ski location. Now with five-star hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants and some of the most awe-inspiring views in Europe that sweep across French, Swiss and Italian summits, it is a skier’s and snowboarder’s paradise.
At 2,300 metres altitude it is the highest ski resort in Europe offering snow cover from November to May each year. It has 600km of pistes that are suitable for all levels, but beginners and intermediates have plenty of choice as there are so many blue and red runs available.
For the more advanced winter sports enthusiast, there are also options galore. Those in search of powder snow will find it on the Peclet and Chavière glaciers and a real challenge lies in wait on the Cime de Caron black run.
As part of the Three Valleys, Val Thorens connects with resorts such as Méribel, La Tania and Courchevel to make up the largest ski area in the world. It is possible to ski the interlinked valleys with one pass, and an intermediate skier should be able to get from Courchevel to Val Thorens in around an hour.
